First and most importantly make sure you have all necessary paperwork, including your visa and passport. Make two copies of your passport, leave one copy in your luggage and another one back at home. Be aware of any travel advisories for the country you will be visiting. Also try to find out about any security and safety issues currently affecting your destination. Another good idea is to have traveler’s insurance.
Before you leave make sure you are properly vaccinated for any common diseases in your destination country. You should make a copy of your travel itinerary and leave it at home with someone. Do not take any valuables or anything you would not want to lose, pack lightly. Leave any unnecessary jewelry at home, but bring an extra pair of glasses if you cannot do without them.
When traveling to other countries you need to remember that you are a guest, and as such should abide by all local laws. You should also try to keep in mind any local customs and be respectful of them. Be considerate of how people dress, do not dress like a tourist or wear flashy or expensive clothing. You should try to blend in with the local scenery as much as possible.

If you are traveling with a companion, it is a good idea to pack half of your clothing in their suitcase and vice versa, that way if you lose your luggage you will still have clothing. Make sure to lock and label your luggage. Do not leave important or valuable items in your hotel room, if possible use the hotel safe. Always make sure to lock your hotel room.
When using public transportation, be aware of possible theft. For overnight travel sleep on top of your luggage. Never accept any gifts of food or drink as it is not uncommon for tourists to be drugged and robbed. Always follow your instincts, if you ever feel unsafe, get out. By following these simple tips and local laws you should be able to stay safe while traveling abroad.
