The Brightes And Best Sights While Cruising Europe
57
Oceans and rivers have always been important means of transportation. Because of this, many of Europe's great cities have grown up close to or even directly over water. This gives cruise passengers the freedom to easily enjoy the vast marvels of Europe without having to roam far from the point of docking. Not having to figure out where to park a car in such crowded cities is a nice bonus, too!
Cruise lines are well aware of this and often take advantage of it by offering guided tours for passengers stretching their legs, but you're perfectly free to go it alone if that's your preference. If you're about to go on a cruise, you will probably want to get the itinerary so you can figure out which places you really want to see, and plan out a schedule for yourself. Typically cruise ships will only dock for a bit under a dozen hours, which is why you need to make the most of your time if you don't want to miss anything. In case you're not sure what to see, we'll run through a quick tour of three of the more famous seaside cities you might be able to visit.
For the artistic, Helsikini will prove to be an enjoyable docking point. With a noted proliferation of museums, gorgeous architecture, and general artistic expression, the beauty and culture of Helsinki is unquestionable. The nearby Baltic sea is warm enough for a lovely swim in the warmer seasons, too.
Perhaps art isn't your thing, though. Maybe you just want to taste the local fare and eyeball a few historic sites? Well, Bergen will be more to your tastes, then, with a welcoming atmosphere that will come to a relief to anyone nervous about 'snobby' Europeans. Local Bergenites are accustomed to and friendly towards tourists.
The third great possibility for exploration that we'll cover here is Oslo. Oslo is hard to sum up in just a few words, due to how broad and varied its sights and opportunities are. From museums to boat tours to nature hikes, you can do enough to thoroughly exhaust yourself and still have plenty left. Perhaps most famously, Oslo is also home to the Medieval Quarter, which contains ancient preserved architecture such as castles and forts. Despite all this, though, you can reach everything without having to drive anywhere, so long as you've got good walking shoes.
The limited docking time may cramp your style eventually, but consider it a necessary drawback alongside all the great benefits traveling via cruise ship offers. While you may not be able to get to know the local folks as much as you'd like to, chances are you'll form a rapport with your fellow passengers instead. The comforts of a cruise ship will serve you well at sea, too, so you don't get bored when not at port.
Don't make the mistake of trying to see and do everything, especially not your first time around! Plan for return trips if you can, but let yourself take the time to enjoy what you're able to enjoy without rushing. A stressed vacation does no one any good, after all.
